Quiero Platicar Contigo | The Weekly Letra

"You cannot destroy the tradition without first learning about it." - Belén Maya

I have a guajiras verse to share with you today along with a video of Belén Maya and Mayte Martín, but first allow me to give you some background:

I'm in Seattle winding down after workshops Belén Maya this week.

On Wednesday I went to a lecture she gave at Seattle Central College.

In that lecture Belén spoke about herself as an artist.

She talked about how she expresses herself as an individual through flamenco. She talked about how she had to dedicate to studying and understanding traditional flamenco in order to do her own thing. She talked about how she danced in tablaos (doing more traditional style flamenco) at night while studying on her own and dancing in her father's company (which was more modern) during the day.

Here is a letra from that clip, and you can hear Mayte Martín sing it at 4 minutes and 50 seconds in the video below.

Flamenco Verses by Palo | The Weekly Letra

Sometimes you want to know a song to go along with the dance form you're studying in class. Other times you want to know the words to that particular flamenco song you like so much. And sometimes you long to know what those words mean.

I'd like to help you with that

Below you'll find a collection of letras (flamenco verses) organized by palo (flamenco form.)

After over four years of translating and posting flamenco songs, and not quite as many years of writing them out and turning them into things like this, there are quite a number of flamenco verses (and often accompanying videos) to be found around here.

I've learned a lot about Spanish, a bit about Caló, and much about flamenco through the process of doing these translations, very often getting help along the way. Some of the translations are better than others, and the letras rarely convey the same feeling in English as they do in their original form. Still the translations give a general idea of what the verse is about.

If Your Dad Tells Your Mom | Viernes con una Letra

We wrap up Ida y Vuelta month with one more guajiras. Oscar was here last week, so I asked him to share a favorite guajiras for today.

That letra is below followed by a video of Concha Jareño dancing por guajiras. LOVE this dance.

Enjoy...

tengo una casa en la Habana destinada para tí ay!

Vidalita | Viernes con una Letra

Today a vidalita letra and a video of Mayte Martín teaching cante...

Oscar is in the other room preparing for tonight's workshop... I'm hearing soleá and lots of pies which is making me want to do a letra por soleá,

But it's ida y vuelta month, so obviously that won't be happening. Speaking of Oscar and cantes de ida y vulelta, his favorite cante is guajiras.

But back to today's letra

Below is part of the vidalita that Mayte Martin sings on her album Querencia. Apparently it's her adaptation of one by Juan Valderrama.

Rumba | Viernes con una Letra

I am hearing Ada singing right now. And Ellie doing palmas. I am seeing Margot dancing. This is all happening in my mind.

And I am smiling.

They are my nieces.

Between Christmas and New Year's Eve the four of us found moments of time here and there to prepare for our show.

I guess it has become an annual thing,

More on that along with a rumbas letra and a video of Estrella Morente.

A Rose in a Rose Bush | Viernes con una Letra

You absolutely positively have to listen to this (the first song in the video below). I'm serious.

It's one of those, and I'm pretty much positive that it will make your life better the moment you press play. You could even just listen to the first twenty seconds though that will likely be impossible because I imagine once you get started you probably will want to hear the whole song.

It's Enrique Morente and his daughter Estrella singing a colombianas.

First the letra:

ya está la rosa perdida

Colombianas | Viernes con una Letra

Last time we were in Jerez I was asking Mercedes for clarification of the words to a tangos letra that we were dancing to.  I got so excited when I saw the Guión to her show Perspectivas (which she got out to show me the words) that she loaned it to me to so that I could look at all of the letras. This is a colombianas I found in there:

Colombianas

Yo quisiera no mirarte
para engañar mi deseo.
Pero siento, niña mía,
que no te miro y te veo:
que se cierran los ojos,
pero no los sentimientos.

Me gusta por la mañana
después del café bebío
pasearme por la Habana
con mi cigarro encendío
y sentarme muy tranquilo
en mi silla o mi sillón
y comprarme un papelón
de esos que llaman diario
y parezco un millonario

rico de la población.
