If You Ever Go To Cádiz | The Weekly Letra

We are studying tangos (with abanico) with Mercedes Ruíz during the Flamenco Tour to Jerez. Naturally, we are LOVING it. The first part of our dance is to this:

Tangos
Popular

I Want to be Free | The Weekly Letra

I originally published this here within the letra, Moraito Como un Lirio by Antonio Sánchez Pecino.

Today I wanted to highlight this estribillo:

Libre quiero ser
Como el pájaro que canta,
Primita, al amanecer

I want to be free
like the bird that sings,
at dawn

You can see it in the video that follows...

Flamenco Verses by Palo | The Weekly Letra

Sometimes you want to know a song to go along with the dance form you're studying in class. Other times you want to know the words to that particular flamenco song you like so much. And sometimes you long to know what those words mean.

I'd like to help you with that

Below you'll find a collection of letras (flamenco verses) organized by palo (flamenco form.)

After over four years of translating and posting flamenco songs, and not quite as many years of writing them out and turning them into things like this, there are quite a number of flamenco verses (and often accompanying videos) to be found around here.

I've learned a lot about Spanish, a bit about Caló, and much about flamenco through the process of doing these translations, very often getting help along the way. Some of the translations are better than others, and the letras rarely convey the same feeling in English as they do in their original form. Still the translations give a general idea of what the verse is about.

Insincerity | Viernes con una Letra

This is not a good situation, the situation going on in today's letra. And then the way David Lagos sings it, well, you feel the meaning of the words even if you don't know what they mean,

Which happens a lot with flamenco singing.

David sang the following letra at our private show here in Jerez the other night. Naturally, I cried.

I wasn't alone.

Tientos David Lagos

La que tanto querer me ofreció
me falló porque era falsa
desde el primer día que tuvo ocasión

The one who offered me so much love
failed me because she was false
from the first day she had the chance

Whoa.

A Lie | Viernes con una Letra

When Sol was here we studied cante por tientos. It was scary singing out loud in front of a bunch of people, even though we all knew each other... But it was great fun too.

Below is one of the letras we sang:

Tientos
Popular

Cuando me meto en mi cama
hablo con mi Dios y le digo
que me parece mentira
lo que tu has hecho conmigo

When I go to bed
I speak with God and I tell him

that it seems a lie
what you've done to me

I Curse Your Green Eyes | Viernes con una Letra

Today a whole song and a video of La Paquera singing it.

Maldigo Tus Ojos Verdes

Today's letra has me dreaming. I wish it had occurred to me a couple of weeks ago while in San Diego when Margot asked to learn a new song.  Because this one feels just right for my sobrinas.

I want what it speaks of.

Un puente.  Yes, a bridge.  And I would make it a magic bridge.  A bridge that could take us over a thousand miles in mere minutes.  Oh the visits we would have!

Anyway, we can sing it together next time.

For today, I share it with you.

Viernes con una Letra | más tientos

Last week I told you we would have more tientos today, so here's a letra and a video of Camarón ...

Tientos
Camarón de la Isla

Cuantas veces yo he pensado
que el mundo es una mentira
cuantos quisieran tener
pá comer lo que otros tiran

How often I have thought
that the world is a lie
How many would like to eat
what others throw out.

Viernes con una Letra | Tientos de El Mellizo

Today a letra por tientos and an old video of Miguel Poveda.

If you know me, you know that I absolutely love tientos.  Someday I will tell you the story of Ricardo's refusal, after much begging, to teach me tientos, but not today. I have loved this palo from the first time I heard it.  And this tientos has perhaps my favorite estribillo of all time.  It is beyond beautiful.  Just read it then listen, and you'll know what I mean.  Oh, and Lamiae sang it for me on Sunday...That was wonderful.

Moraíto como un lirio
Antonio Sánchez Pecino

Mi cuerpecito lo tengo
moraíto como un lirio,
si Dios me diera la muerte
acababan mis martiritos
