Try This 12 Count Marcaje [Flamenco Dance Steps]

Below I take you through a marking step in the compás of twelve.

Add it to one of your dance choreographies, or use it as an exercise to practice: ⁣

  • Changing directions ⁣

  • Spotting⁣

  • Holding a focused gaze⁣

  • ⁣Body positioning⁣

Ready?

Some notes

The arms:

During the second half of the compás when you’re preparing to pivot and pivoting, your arms will follow the movements of your legs. ⁣

(So you’ll move the same arm with the same leg.)⁣

You can do the first arm change on the 4, 5, 6, or 7.⁣

The gaze:

When I’m explaining the gaze above, I leave out two steps. ⁣

Don’t worry about this, the gaze stays as I have explained it in the reel.⁣

Steps with counts:⁣

12 right planta (ball)⁣⁣

1 pause⁣

& brush left foot in front of right⁣

2 continue movement with left foot⁣

3 right planta

4 left planta behind⁣

5 right planta in place⁣

6 left planta forward⁣

7 right planta ⁣forward⁣

& pivot to the left on the ball of the right foot to face backward⁣

8 left planta

9 right planta forward⁣

& pivot left on the ball of the right foot to face forward ⁣

10 left planta

Here you can see an example of how it could go with music.
