I especially appreciated her commentary on this as people often mistakenly interpret female flamenco dancing to be sexual.
What Concha Says
Flamenco in today’s world:
“People who did flamenco sixty years ago sang Mineras in the mine. As much as a singer might want to sing this Minera the same way today, they can’t because they have shelter to come home to; their work is on a computer… We’ll never be able to do flamenco the way people did it sixty years ago because we live different lives now. So, logically, flamenco changes.”
Sensuality vs. Sexuality:
“We dance with our hips. We dance with our whole bodies, with our hands. Depending on how you move your hands the movement can be very sensual. Hip movement of course is very feminine. Sexual, however, no, I don’t think so, and I wouldn’t want for somebody to watch me dance and for it to look like I’m trying to show my sexuality. This is not the sensation I want to transmit. But sensuality, yes, and femininity, of course!”
