Sometimes class feels too easy.  And other times it feels too hard.

I've been in both situations.

And here's what I've discovered

When class feels too easy, it's usually because I've got my lazy pants on. No seas floja, Laura.

When class feels too difficult, it's usually because hard-on-myself me has taken over. Tranquila, Chiquilla.

We can get a lot or a little out of class

And it's really up to us.

I mean it.

There is basically one main concept to understand to help us get the most of any class.

We’ll go there soon, but for now, let’s get specific.

Today I’ll share with you some things that I do when class feels too hard.  Tomorrow I’ll tell you what I do when I want more challenge.

(And by the way, I’ve noticed that the ideas below are just as relevant to life outside of flamenco as they are to life inside the studio, as is often the case.)

Some ways to make it easier when you feel like you have absolutely no idea what you're doing:

Idea #1. Get one thing down

If the teacher has set arms with the feet and it feels like too much, leave the arms out for now. Get the step, and add arms later. Feet first, then arms, then hands, then head, then hips...

Idea #2. Focus on the parts you like the most

If you're starting to feel frustrated or overwhelmed, let some stuff go and give your attention to the moves that you most enjoy.  Don't worry, this doesn't mean you won't learn anything else.

Idea #3. Notice one detail to help you remember the others

For example, if you find yourself struggling with the same step over and over, notice which foot it starts on, and keep reminding yourself of that.  (advice from Ricardo)  Eventually, it will happen naturally.

Idea #4. Give yourself permission to get it wrong

Another piece of advice from Ricardo, and so many others.  If we're not making any mistakes then we're not doing it right.  We learn by messing up. So mess up!  And then mess up again.

Mainly ...

If it feels too difficult,

Focus on the basics.

And if you're feeling frustrated, stop for a moment, breathe, and

Remember why you're there.

Check back tomorrow for some ideas on what to do when things feel too easy.

And now, you:

Was this helpful?  Let me know.  And, tell us, what do you do when you’re in a situation that feels like it’s just too much?  In flamenco (or in life).  I know you have more ideas.  Share your thoughts below in the comments.
