A Short-Lived Romance | The Weekly Letra

Guitarists, I think you’re going to like this one.

Following the letra you’ll find a video that touches on how you can accompany something like this.

Tangos
Traditional

Mi madre me dijo a mí
que un querer de poco tiempo
no le criaba raíz

My mother told me
that a short-lived romance
does not take root

How about those words.

Do you agree?

You can hear this letra in the video below that both explains and demonstrates how it can serve as a coletilla. This is how you hear it sung in the second part of the video, following this letra.

What’s a coletilla?

A coletilla is a short letra or phrase sung at the end of another letra. The singer will often repeat it or parts of it as s/he likes. If there is a dancer, the singer will repeat as needed to accompany the dancer.

You can also hear Melchora Ortega sing this one here about one minute in.

A translation note:

I debated whether to translate the second line, un querer de poco tiempo as a short-lived love affair or a short-lived love instead of a short-lived romance. I also considered using the word fleeting instead of short-lived. So many options with this one. What do you think works best? Let me know below!
